The European Innovation Council supports breakthrough technologies from early research to commercial scale up. Its three best known funding programmes: EIC Pathfinder, EIC Transition and EIC Accelerator that are designed for different stages of technology development.
In simple terms:
- EIC Pathfinder supports early stage scientific and technological research.
- EIC Transition develops promising research results into market-ready innovations.
- EIC Accelerator helps startups and SMEs commercialise and scale breakthrough products.
The programmes are sometimes presented as a funding pathway, although previous Pathfinder or Transition funding is not required to apply for the EIC Accelerator.
What is EIC Pathfinder?
EIC Pathfinder supports ambitious research that could lead to entirely new technologies. It is aimed mainly at research teams working on high risk scientific and technological ideas at approximately Technology Readiness Levels 1 to 4.
Projects should present a credible vision for a radically new technology, a clear scientific breakthrough and a high-risk research approach with significant potential impact.
Most Pathfinder Open applications require a consortium of at least three independent organisations from different eligible countries. Pathfinder Challenges may also allow single applicants or smaller consortia, depending on the call.
Funding can reach €4 million per project, with higher amounts possible when properly justified. The total EIC Pathfinder budget for 2026 is €262 million. most relevant for:
- universities and research organisations;
- deep-tech research teams;
- early-stage scientific spin off projects;
- technologies that still require substantial research and proof of concept.
What is EIC Transition?
EIC Transition helps turn research results into credible innovation and business opportunities. It supports technology validation, demonstration, market analysis, business planning and the development of an entrepreneurial team.
Projects usually begin with a completed experimental proof of concept at TRL 3 or TRL 4 and aim to reach approximately TRL 5 or 6.
A key eligibility condition is the origin of the technology. The proposal must build on results from an eligible EU funded research project, such as EIC Pathfinder, European Research Council Proof of Concept, certain Horizon Europe or Horizon 2020 projects, research infrastructure projects and selected European Defence Fund research projects with civil or dual-use applications.
Eligible applicants include startups, SMEs, universities, research organisations and consortia of up to five organisations. Grants can reach €2.5 million, and the total EIC Transition budget for 2026 is €100 million. y be suitable when:
- a promising technology has already been demonstrated in the laboratory;
- the project is based on eligible EU funded research results;
- further testing is needed in a relevant application environment;
- the team needs to validate the market and commercialisation strategy.
What is EIC Accelerator?
EIC Accelerator supports startups and SMEs developing high risk innovations with the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones.
The programme focuses mainly on technologies at TRL 6 to 8, when a working solution already exists and the company is preparing for commercialisation, industrialisation or international growth.
Successful applicants may receive:
- a grant below €2.5 million for innovation activities;
- equity or quasi equity investment of up to €10 million;
- blended finance combining a grant and investment;
- coaching, mentoring and access to investors and corporate partners.
Applications are normally submitted by a single startup or SME. Small mid-cap companies may apply for investment-only support under certain conditions. The total EIC Accelerator budget for 2026 is €634 million. or is designed for companies that already have:
- a tested and defensible technology;
- a clear commercial application;
- strong international growth potential;
- a capable management team;
- substantial funding needs that private investors may consider too risky at the current stage.
Which EIC programme fits your project?
The right programme depends primarily on the maturity and origin of the technology.
| Programme | Typical stage | Main applicants | Funding |
| EIC Pathfinder | Early research, TRL 1-4 | Research teams and consortia | Up to €4 million |
| EIC Transition | Technology and business validation, TRL ¾-5/6 | SMEs, startups and research organisations | Up to €2.5 million |
| EIC Accelerator | Commercialisation and scale-up, TRL 6-8 | Individual startups and SMEs | Grant below €2.5 million and investment up to €10 million |
Before selecting a call, applicants should assess the technology readiness level, intellectual property position, eligible project background, target market, team capabilities and financing needs.
